Coating polyurethane sponge with Dy-MOF for efficient oil–water separation in complex environments

Leakage of industrial oil and organic solvents seriously harms environment ecology yet demanding highly efficient durable materials for oil–water separations. In this work, ultra-light flexible polyurethane (PU) sponges were engineered to 3D separators by coating the dysprosium metal framework (Dy-MOF) onto surfaces PU frames. Through a facile impregnation, Dy-MOF was attached full frames sponges. Consequently, liquid contact extended from these on top layers whole rack. Superhydrophobicity with water angles up 152.08° lipophilicity enable continuous separations dichloromethane through resulted [email protected] in mode. The modified own high gravimetric absorption capacities solvents, resistances temperature variations, corrosive solutions, mechanical abrasions, thanks well-connected stable superhydrophobic/supportive interfaces. An separation successfully piloted oily wastewater consisting water-in-oil emulsions stabilized surfactants, demonstrating potential practical treatment complex environments. Mechanism leading superior capability studied inferred as combined effects physical chemical properties arisen but porous matrix.
